The Walled Gardens of Cannington

Located within the grounds of a medieval priory, The Walled Gardens of Cannington is an award-winning RHS partner garden that blends classic horticulture with modern design.

Step into nearly 900 years of history and botanical beauty

Whether you are a keen gardener, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, our gardens offer a stunning seasonal display year-round.

Designated a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction by VisitEngland, our grounds are much more than just a pretty view. As a dynamic learning environment for Cannington College students, the gardens are maintained to an exceptional standard, featuring diverse plant collections and innovative designs.

Steeped in history

The site of the Walled Gardens dates back to 1138, originally established by the De Courcy family as a Benedictine nunnery. Over the centuries, the grounds have witnessed a fascinating past—from medieval tunnels and tales of ghostly nuns to its evolution into a hub for land-based education.

Today, the ancient walls still stand, enclosing a space that has been lovingly restored and reimagined, including a multi-million-pound refurbishment in 2015 supported by EDF Energy.

What we offer

The botanical glasshouse

Home to exotic species and arid collections, providing a tropical escape whatever the weather.

The sub-tropical walk

A vibrant, jungle-like pathway that transports you straight to warmer climates.

The blue garden

A masterclass in colour-themed planting, offering tranquillity and striking visual impact.

The potager & herbaceous Border

Traditional favourites that showcase the best of British gardening heritage.

Fernery & dry garden

Specialist areas demonstrating expert cultivation techniques.

This little gem is worth a visit as it’s off the beaten track but has a wonderful planting arrangement in themed gardens and a lovely tropical glasshouse. The staff are delightful and the little cafe does a good choice of light dishes, baked spuds and beverages.
