Course Overview

This qualification provides both practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for working as a Dog Grooming Assistant. Courses start throughout the year, and information on enrolment and schedules can be obtained by contacting us for enquiries.

Location: Training takes place in our fully equipped dog grooming salon at Cannington College.

The curriculum covers essential skills and knowledge, including:

  • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
  • Drying dogs and preparing them for styling
  • Trimming dogs’ coats to prepare for styling
  • Moving and lifting dogs safely
  • Maintaining cleanliness and biosecurity in the grooming environment
  • Professional conduct in a grooming setting
  • Introduction to dog anatomy, breed characteristics, and behavior.

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes:

  • Practical tuition in the purpose-built salon
  • Classroom-based theory sessions
  • Wider reading and directed study outside of class
  • Work experience outside the college to build skills and confidence
  • Internally and externally set practical assessments
  • An externally set and marked online examination undertaken during college hours

Progression Options

Upon successful completion, students can progress onto the Level 3 Dog Grooming qualification enabling further professional development in dog grooming. also offered at Cannington College, in order to become a fully qualified Dog Groomer.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however learners must attend an introductory evening where they will be expected to demonstrate a reasonable level of literacy due to the amount of written work and wider reading needed to complete this qualification.

Experience of handling dogs and work experience within a dog grooming environment are desirable.
