Delivered by Cannington College in partnership with the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy (Southern Hub), these courses have been developed with industry partners, educational partners and the government. This course is designed for employed apprentices across a wide range of industries, as the curriculum fully supports the Nuclear, Construction, Manufacturing and Retail sectors.

You will begin with an initial three-day college attendance for induction, introductions and document completion. Your first four units will then be delivered in accelerated, short-form sessions to build a strong foundation before transitioning to online learning.

You are required to attend all scheduled sessions, whether held at the college or remotely via Microsoft Teams. Your attendance will be automatically logged and monitored and relayed directly to your employer’s responsible person or department. You must fulfill a strict off-the-job training requirement totalling 835.20 hours over the three-year period, which you will evidence through timesheets.

Apprenticeships allow you to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with behavioural and personal skills required for your job and future career. You will develop comprehensive knowledge, skills and behaviours across health and safety, quality, project and business acumen, optimisation, and continuous improvement.

Topics may include:

  • Project controls fundamentals
  • Project communications and behaviours
  • Project risk and assumptions
  • Project commercial awareness and contracts
  • Project source criteria, business case justifications, HSE & quality management
  • Project planning, scheduling, costing, budgeting and baseline
  • Project optimisation and continuous improvement
  • Project tracking and analysing techniques.

Assessment Methods

You will learn through a mix of workplace training, formal instruction through the National College for Nuclear and the opportunity to embed new skills in a real work context. The curriculum consists of 12 units of delivery, each featuring a knowledge exam to ensure you have fully absorbed the material.

After the first six months, you will complete your first three exams. You will continue to complete sets of three exams at set periods over the next 18 months until all 12 are finished.

You will also create a comprehensive project that encompasses all the units within a standard project lifecycle.

In your third year, the focus shifts to skills assessment, requiring 12 reports and 11 recorded structured interviews to further evidence your knowledge, skills and behaviours for the Level 3 Diploma. The end goal is to proceed to Gateway and complete an End Point Assessment to graduate from the apprenticeship.

Progression Options

As this apprenticeship is fully transferable, progression options are vast and driven by consumer demand as well as your own ambitions alongside your employer and the college. Upon completion, you could advance into further academia or specialised career paths, including:

  • Project Controls or Management Degrees
  • Business Development at an HNC or Degree level
  • Quality Assurance and Management roles
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Risk and Change Management Expert
  • Planning and Cost Engineering.
