Course Overview

A practical course designed for the professional user or anyone who requires the National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC) Certificate of Competence.

The course covers specialist cutting techniques for using saws up trees. CS39 is accepted by the HSE as evidence of suitable training and competence for professional arborist who operate chainsaws and perform aerial tree-work operations.

The practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is required prior to being assessed for the Certificate of Competence, as required by legislation.

Topics may include:

  • Identify hazards, risks and controls associated with the site, task and machine
  • Emergency procedures relevant to site
  • Industry guides relevant to using a chainsaw from a rope and harness
  • Perform tree condition assessment of the tree for hazards and the implications of the hazards when identified
  • Use and maintain tools, equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Assessment Methods

A theory and practical assessment will be carried out by an NPTC Approved Assessor.

Progression Options

You could progress to CS32 – Felling and Processing Trees over 380mm. Learners must already hold:

  • CS30 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting
  • CS31 – Felling Small Trees up to 380mm
  • CS38 – Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue.

Entry Requirements

You are required to hold the following certificates:

  • CS30 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting
  • CS31 – Felling Small Trees up to 380mm
  • CS38 – Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue.
